Ireen, my mother, passed from this world June 7, 2014. She is missed.

Mom had friends of all ages and in all walks of life. She was sharp in her mind and young in her heart. I’ll remember her being ready with a cute story or a funny joke to cheer someone up.

An optimist who bore her pain in silence, mom taught me to face life’s trials – shoulders back and chin up.

Thank you mom. I love you. Rest in peace.

Your daughter, Susan

Vincent ‘Jim’ LoMenzo

After an incredibly strong, and equally silent, two-year battle with lung cancer, it is with the deepest regret that we announce the passing of Jim LoMenzo.

So perfectly described as “reliable as the rise of the sun,” Jim loved to help people. He was always there to lend a hand, whether you asked for it or not.

His love for helping people was only surpassed by the love he had for his family. He carried the wedding picture of him and Gloria, his wife of almost 60 years, in his wallet and proudly showed it to everyone.

Jim took great pride in whatever his sons were interested in and always wanted to share in those activities, which delighted “his boys” to no end.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Jim developed an early love for both baseball and music. These interests would stay with him throughout his life. He was an avid NY Yankees fan, and a Perry Como-style crooner.

In his later years, Jim was always inviting people to his Lincoln Town Car (his pride and joy) to listen to his self-recorded album of standards.

Jim was many things during his early life: Korean War vet (Army PFC LoMenzo), the co-owner of a shoe store with his “Pop” and finally, the career that made him so very happy: construction foreman. After 35 years, Jim retired as a superintendent.

In 1995, Jim and Gloria relocated from Brooklyn to Sonoma. Jim would often tell the story of how, during a visit to see family, he instantly fell in love with the Creekside community, especially the clubhouse.

Upon retirement, three years after that visit, Jim realized his dream: He was home.
Immediately upon arrival, Jim became an institution at the Creekside Clubhouse. He rose to president of the Creekside Critters Table Tennis team, was a chief instigator of the “pool room gang” and served as sound man for many of the clubhouse events.
Jim was a fun-loving fundraiser and all around tireless worker for various clubs: the I.C.F., Retired Teamsters and Boys & Girls Club, to name but a few.

Jim leaves behind his wife, Gloria; sons, Michael, James and Peter; sister, Lucy Oliveri; daughters-in-law, Cathy, Angie and Leslye; granddaughters, Danielle and Zoe; great-grandchildren, Andrew, Jacob and Sophia; as well as a host of nephews, nieces and friends (who he always affectionally called Murray).

Jim joins his father, Michael; mother, Maria; brother, Larry; and mother-in-law, Anna Giangreco, in heaven.

There will be a vigil at Duggan’s Mission Chapel on Monday, July 21, at 5:30 p.m. On Tuesday, July 22, there will be a Mass at St. Francis Solano Church at noon, followed by a memorial at Jim’s beloved Creekside Clubhouse.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Hospice, the American Cancer Society, or any charity you support

Juanita D. Brinkley (Holt, Fisher, Iacomine), 87, passed away peacefully in Napa, on July 19, 2014, with friends and family by her side. Juanita was born in Butte, Montana, on Oct. 6, 1926. Her immigrant Italian family grew up during the Depression and barely had beans to eat.

Sometime after World War II, Juanita and her family moved to San Francisco. Juanita graduated from George Washington High School, class of 1944, in San Francisco. Juanita learned how to weld during World War II and joined the ranks of “Rosie the Riveters,” building war ships at the Oakland Shipyards.

Eventually, her family moved to Sonoma Valley and settled down. Juanita fell in love, moved to Washington state and had a family. They decided to homestead in Alaska and met a wonderful family pal nicknamed T-Bone. Juanita broke-up with her husband and moved back to Sonoma Valley about 1962, dragging old T-Bone and kids with her. Juanita struggled through many obstacles as a waitress in local restaurants. She was trained as a psych-tech and worked at Sonoma Developmental Center for many years. There she helped with the newsletter and wrote many articles. Eventually, she got the “itch” and left to work on the Alaskan Pipeline. When Juanita came back to Sonoma Valley, she befriended and helped many, many people. “Karma pay-back” as she would say.

Many wonderful friends and neighbors considered Juanita the true mayor of Boyes Hot Springs. Juanita held true to the motto of Jack London, “Not to be as a smoldering ash, but to be as a roaring comet, flying high.”

Juanita is predeceased by her husband, Joe; daughter, Camille; and son, Glen. She is survived by daughters, Lynne and Michelle; brother, Dave; grandson Shane; great-grandchildren, Jesse and Camille.

A memorial service will be held at Duggan’s Mission Chapel, 525 W. Napa St., Sonoma, CA 95476, on Friday July 25, 2014, at 2 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Friends In Sonoma Helping (FISH) at P.O. Box 507, Sonoma, CA 95476.

Arrangements are under the direction of Duggan’s Mission Chapel, Mission Cremation Service. Inquiries can be made to them at (707) 996-3655 or by visiting their website at www.duggansmissionchapel.com.

David ‘Dave’ Ian Robbins

David “Dave” Ian Robbins, 62, passed away unexpectedly on July 18, 2014. in Oakland. Dave entered this world on Dec. 17, 1952, in Hamburg, Germany. The entrance may have been relatively uneventful but the impressions he left on his journey forward were anything but. His father, Keith Dixon Robbins, was a British career officer and met Dave’s mother, Margaret Elizabeth, in Egypt during World War II. She also served in the military as a plane spotter and radio board operator.

Through Dave’s early life, his family was stationed at different locations around Europe and South East Asia, from Germany to Singapore. Dave gathered his stories and friends, making lasting impressions (both good and vexing) wherever he went. Rules were a mere suggestion to Dave and music was his passion second only to his wife, Sarah, whom he met while working in construction. With the traditional “catcall,” Sarah ignored him on a daily basis as she walked by the construction site on her way to work. Needless to say, she brought home her future husband who sported hair down to his waist and a certain counterculture style. Over the next few years, Dave and Sarah followed the wind. He worked as an orderly, a construction worker, and as a chauffeur and salesman at Virgin Records. It was the combination of these last two that added to his lexicon of wonderful stories about chauffeuring everyone, from the Sex Pistols to the Runways. During this time, a childhood friend had invited them to America. In 1980, the wind blew them across the water and they never returned.

It was always a challenge making ends meet, but Dave worked at a variety of jobs before settling into roofing. In 1982, their son, Kieron, was born and in 1985, their daughter, Kemplen, came along, and they became a clan. Dave was family first; nothing was more important and he spent the rest of his life devoted to supporting his kids. From field trips to track meets, Witchy Poo to chaperoning, Dave was always there.

Family wasn’t just in the immediate; it extended to his entire community and beyond. You could always find Dave at a charity event or wherever a hand was needed. He loved kids and mentored many who couldn’t seem to find their path. There were never barriers of age. Dave moved in crowds both young and old and always had a story for every occasion. Music and Dave were synonymous and Bob Dylan was the ruler supreme. His knowledge of Bob Dylan was legendary and was always a part of his radio show on Thursday nights at KSVY. Dave was many things to different people – a husband, a father, a poet, a musician, a storyteller, a friend. The entire community is mourning the loss of David Ian Robbins.

He is survived by his wife, Sarah Robbins, of Sonoma; his son and daughter-in-law, Kieron and Kamela Robbins, of Sonoma; his daughter, Kemplen Robbins, of Petaluma; his brothers, John, Tony, Simon and Christopher Robbins, all of England; and his cousin, Dave Sliney, of Klamath Falls. There are too many people in David’s circle to mention everyone by name, but he loved and respected you all.

James Marshall Berry is the coordinator for the Celebration of Dave’s life which is set for Satuday, Aug 9, at 4 p.m. at the Moose Lodge. Check Facebook for updates.

Music was such a huge part of Dave’s life and anyone who would like to share their music and participate, please contact James at jmberry@sonomamusic.com. Maryssa Stovall is the coordinator for the potluck. Please contact her at: maryssa.stovall@yahoo.com if you would like to bring something. Or, please just come to the event and raise a pint to Dave.

Arrangements are under the direction of Duggan’s Mission Chapel. Inquiries to (707) 996-3655, or duggansmissionchapel.com.

Edgar L. Lowe Jr., 80, passed away at his home in Sonoma on July 20, 2014, surrounded by his adoring family.

Born Nov. 8, 1933, in Ontario, Ed attended USC, where he was a member of the National Honor Fraternity Blue Key, and graduated with a BS degree in business administration. Following graduation, he served in the US Navy, where he achieved the rank of lieutenant. He and his former wife, Darlene, lived in Moraga, where they raised their children, David Lowe, of Danville, and Alan Lowe, of Alamo. Ed joined the firm of Hambrecht & Quist and became their most successful institutional stockbroker for nearly all his 30 years there.

In 1994, Ed married Susan Singer. He loved her very much and was a devoted and considerate husband. They were true partners who shared wonderful times together.

To Ed, family was everything. He was a wonderful father to his sons, and a loving mentor to his six grandchildren: Allie, Gregory and Stephanie (David and Connie) and Trevor, Kevin and Scott (Alan and Julie). He instilled his values in them and gave them important life lessons. They loved him, and miss him very much.

When Ed retired, his mantra was “now it’s time for me to give back.” His belief in the value of education led to his commitment to Students Rising Above, a Bay Area-wide college scholarship and advising program. In recognition of Ed’s outstanding contributions, SRA created the Ed and Susan Lowe Named Scholarship.

In Sonoma, Ed joined the board of the Sonoma Valley Education Foundation. He devoted his efforts to the establishment of much-needed pre-schools. Through his generous support, two new pre-schools were opened. His commitment is recognized on a plaque at the Sassarini School Preschool Classroom.

Ed’s greatest happiness came from helping others – whether it was making wise investments for his friends so their kids could go to college, generously helping underserved students achieve their dreams, or just being a good friend to his community. He will be deeply missed.

In lieu of flowers, Ed would surely appreciate donations to The Ed and Susan Lowe Scholarship Fund, Students Rising Above, P.O. Box 29174, San Francisco, CA 94129, or the Sonoma Valley Education Foundation, P. O. Box 493, Sonoma, CA 95476.

Mary Jane ‘MJ’ Allen

Mary Jane “MJ” Allen passed away on July 30, 2014, at her home in Sonoma, surrounded by family after a short, hard-fought battle with ALS.

She was 57.

MJ was born April 26, 1957, in Sharon, Pennsylvania, and moved as a young child with her family to Downey. They later settled in Stockton, where she graduated from Lincoln High School. She went on to graduate from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, with a degree in English. Additionally, she studied graphic design at San Jose State University. She worked in graphic design in San Francisco and Santa Rosa and also had her own design firm in Sonoma for most of her career. She had lived in Sonoma for the past 20 years.

These things say what MJ did, but they don’t say who she was.

Spunky and adventurous. Fun, fashionable and clever. Artistic and generous. These characteristics are just the beginning. MJ loved books and travel and was the ultimate trip advisor. She adored her husband and was a fiercely devoted mother. She was never happier than when she was with family and friends, especially when accompanied by rousing conversation. For big-hearted MJ, there was always room for more, be it another person around the table, a child who needed a haven or a cute animal. There was always room for more love.

Mary Jane Allen is survived by her husband of 25 years, Mark Zall; and her daughter, Madeleine Carter (Sean); son, Jakob; and grandson, Arlo Carter, all of Sonoma. She is also survived by her parents, Arlene and Howard Allen, of Stockton; brothers, Chuck Allen (Mary), of San Diego, and Jim Allen (Maria), Valenica, Spain; mother-in-law, Terrie Zall; brothers-in-law, Greg Zall and David Leyva, all of Sonoma; niece, Katie Allen; and nephews, Ben Allen, Santiago Allen and Juan Allen.

The family would like to thank the dedicated friends and family who provided support during MJ’s illness.

A celebration of life, with plenty of Motown music, will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in MJ’s honor may be sent to Clarke Schools for Hearing and Speech, Development Office, 45 Round Hill Road, Northampton, MA 01060 or by visiting www.clarkeschools.org/support-clarke/donate.

Sydne passed away peacefully at her home in Schellville on July 26, 2014, at the age of 84.  She was born Sept. 1, 1929, to Albert Walker St. John and Olive Lamar St. John, in Lakota, North Dakota.

Sydne married Edward Lely on Nov. 9, 1947, and they moved to Sonoma in 1956 to raise their four sons.

Sydne worked several jobs over her years in Sonoma.  She worked for a short time at the Sonoma Developmental Center and then at The Sonoma Index-Tribune, but spent many years as a bookkeeper at the Valley Drug Store in Boyes Springs.

Most of her jobs were part-time as she always made sure her sons could make it to baseball, football, or track practice, even piano lessons.  She had hoped that one of her sons might take an interest in music but sports were always first.

She loved to garden and would instruct Edward which vegetable and flowers to plant and where to plant them on their Schellville ranch.  For years, they brought them to the farmers market and had many loyal customers for their sunflowers, gladiolas and pussy willows.

Sydne’s main hobby was her family.  Christmas and Thanksgiving were always large dinners enjoyed by the whole family.  As the family grew and it became harder for her sons to meet on these holidays, she began a St. Patrick’s Day dinner that would ensure all the members of the now much larger family could attend.

Sydne was preceded in death by her husband Edward; son Dirk; and sisters, Joanne Brown and Phyllis Stefonowitz.  She is survived by her three sons, Chris (Kathy), Robyn (Rosemary), Kevin (Joanne) and daughter-in-law Paula Lely, all of Sonoma; brother, Marshall St. John, of Los Angeles; 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and two great-grandchildren due in October.

The family would like to thank Sydne’s niece, Renee Archer, for her many years of taking care of Sydne and to Josephine Filipo for her last two years as caregiver.

A memorial service will be held at the Sonoma Veterans Memorial Park, 90 First St. W., Sonoma, on Saturday, Aug. 23, at 10 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make donations in Sydne’s name to Pets Lifeline of Sonoma.

Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Sigrid Farrell Dale

Elizabeth “Betty” Sigrid Farrell Dale was born on Oct. 17, 1921, to Helen and Frank Farrell in Buffalo, New York. She died on July 31, 2014 in her Sonoma home. She was the oldest of 13 children and was a true matriarch, in every sense of the word, to her brothers, sisters and their loved ones.

Betty married Edward “Eddie” Daluiso Dale on Aug. 23, 1941. They were married for 55 years when Eddie passed in 1996.  They created a very loving and vibrant family of six children – three boys and three girls and 10 grandchildren. Eddie and Betty truly danced through life together and lived for their family.

Betty was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, friend and citizen.  Everyone felt loved and welcomed in her home. Big family meals, game nights, dance parties and festive holidays were just some of the regular events that were so much a part of 236 Orchard Drive, where Betty lived for 60 years of her beautiful life.

She worked part time, for almost 20 years, at the Boulevard Federal Credit Union until the age of 85 years old. Betty enjoyed the many friends she met through her work.

Betty spent winters in Sonoma, starting in 2006, and countless summer vacations in Lake Tahoe. In May 2012, Betty moved to Sonoma full time and called Merrill Gardens/Emeritus home for the last two years of her long life. With the majority of her children and grandchildren being spread between San Francisco, Sonoma and Lake Tahoe, Sonoma was the ideal place for her to be close to all of them.

Betty loved flowers, birds, dancing, playing bridge and scrabble, laughter and intellectual conversations about the state of world affairs. Betty was bright and kind and you felt loved and accepted when in her presence. Her favorite quote was “Do unto others as you would like done unto you,” and her life exemplified this quote.

Betty is survived by her six children: Edward Dale, of San Francisco, Diane Dale, of Buffalo, New York, Deborah Dale Wolf, of San Francisco, Douglas Dale, and his wife, Kathleen, of Lake Tahoe, Timothy Dale, of San Francisco and Sonoma, and Michelle Dale Jernigan, of Sonoma. Her predeceased siblings are Virginia Farrell, Bernard Farrell, John Farrell, William Farrell, Harriet Nuchereno, Marianne Olick and Alma Andreana. She is also survived by countless Farrells: nieces, nephews, in-laws and they all have very fond and loving memories of Betty.

Betty’s children would like to make a special mention of her friends at Merrill Gardens/Emeritus. In a very short period of time they became special friends in her life.

Her remains will lay to final rest with her beloved husband at Mt. Olivet in Kenmore, New York. In celebration of her amazing life, a West Coast service will take place in Sonoma this September, followed by an East Coast service in Buffalo, New York this fall, her favorite time of year.

Eddie and Betty were both passionate advocates of Equal Rights, therefore, in lieu of flowers please donate to the Southern Poverty Law Center, 400 Washington Ave., Montgomery, Alabama 36104. In memory of member: Elizabeth S. Dale.
