John R. Pickard

John R. Pickard, admired by his family and friends, left this world to fly with the angels on Aug. 16, 2014, with his family by his side. He was 74 years old.

John was born on Aug. 21, 1939, in Sacramento, to John and Eddra Pickard. John was most known as a man of few words but one of the most giving and generous souls. His own spiritual paths guided his beliefs that each and every one of us are here to help each other.

John spent his childhood years in San Francisco, and summers in McCloud. As a young man, he served in the Army National Guard in Sacramento, California, from 1956-58. After an honorable discharge from the Army, he spent much of his time in the great outdoors, falling trees and cutting firewood for donation for those less fortunate. John was a man of many trades.

He enjoyed working as a carpenter and roofer before beginning his career working for the state.  John’s state service began at Dewitt State Hospital in Auburn, California, as a service and supply officer.  He then transferred to Stockton State Hospital and then went on to Agnews State Hospital in San Jose.

Wanting a quieter lifestyle, John and his family then moved to Sonoma, California, in 1972 in which he continued his state service at Sonoma Developmental Center. John’s passion and interests in ships and airplanes lead him to accept a shipwright position at Mare Island placing him in the perfect niche. He loved the shipyard and was cleared for a special high security task force in which he received several awards. After Mare Island closed, John took a position at the Sonoma Valley Unified School District in the maintenance department for three years before deciding to retire at the age of 60 to enjoy time with family and friends.

John’s lifelong journey was accompanied by his life companion and love, Nira Pickard. Together they raised their children with the utmost devotion. Children, Ronald Bolles, Renee Wicklund, (son-in-law Andrew) Aaron Pickard, (daughter-in-law, Melanie) and Tina Chavous. He had six grandchildren that he loved and adored, Brooke Calleja, Brady Wicklund, Cody Bolles, Brittany Pickard, Isabella Pickard and Morgan Chavous. John was survived by nephews, Jim Nott  (Gina) and Richard Steiner.

John was preceded in death by his parents John and Eddra Pickard; his sisters, Patsy Pickard and Sandra Henley; and brother, Ronald Pickard.

John and his family would like to acknowledge a very special angel that cared for him with so much love and tenderness for the past year of his life. Elenoa Nainoka was a true angel whom fell from heaven when John’s family most needed her.

Please join our family for a celebration of John’s life on Saturday, Aug. 30, 2014, at 1 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints (Sonoma Ward) 16280 La Grama Aqua Caliente, California 95476.

Family would like to express their appreciation to the Hospice By The Bay team for their ongoing support and excellence in providing care at such a fragile time in our lives.

Donations can be made to Hospice By The Bay, 190 W. Napa St. Sonoma, California 95476.

Debra Ann Costner passed away on Aug. 20, 2014, after a long battle against cancer.

Debra was born on Staten Island, New York, where she spent her childhood. She also lived in Ohio and attended college in Minnesota, then moved to the Bay Area, where she held positions as a CFO or CEO until she bought and ran Bay Area Businesswoman for several years. When advertising revenues dried up during the recession, she acquired licensing to become a financial consultant at AXA Advisors in San Francisco. As a respected mentor during these years she helped dozens of people develop their careers and build their lives.

But when the weekend arrived, Debra headed for the rivers. For several years, she led whitewater rafting trips with Friends of the River and took over raising funds to support the river, which more than doubled during her period of involvement.

She loved to travel, especially when she was behind the wheel. She and her partner of nine years, Jude, enjoyed several long trips in Mexico where Debra did all the driving! She loved her nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, and never missed their birthdays. Debra was a powerful woman in every arena of her life, and she will be missed by many.

She was predeceased by her parents, Allen Costner and Elizabeth Buckley Costner. Debra is survived by her partner, Jude Cameron; two sisters, Susan Costner and Lynda Crombie; a brother, Alan Costner; nieces, Shannon Gotelli, Lindsay Melo, Elizabeth Crombie Marsh, Melissa Crombie, Bayley and Kyle Costner; grandnieces and grandnephews, CJ, Gabriel, Alicia, Andrew and Tia; and her cat, Batik, who has shared her life for the past 14 years.

The new Dutch Bros. coffee franchise up Broadway from Sonoma Valley High School is proving to be a big hit with local students, both as customers and as employees. According to local operator Joey Shoemaker (center), the drive-through and take-out coffee shop employs 10 part time students under the age of 24 from Sonoma, and they are still hiring. Pictured with Shoemaker are (left to right): Sarah Atencio, SVHS ‘11, Estelle Olson, SVHS ‘11 and Ryan Abshear, junior at Justin-Siena High School in Napa. Shoemaker and his wife, Mackenzie, are excited to give back to the community, particularly the schools. On Wednesday, Aug. 20, the store will donate $1 from every beverage sold to the Sonoma Valley Education Foundation. Earlier this week, local teachers were invited to come in for a free coffee. Community promotions and giveback days are communicated on the store’s Facebook and Instagram sites.

Rita Viola (Senteno) Casias

Rita Viola (Senteno) Casias, Sonoma resident, died peacefully on May 10 – just four days before her 88th birthday – in Napa, following a persistent illness.

Rita is survived by three sons and their spouses, Paul and Maria Casias, Richard and Estelle Casias, Glenn and Tami Casias; and Rita’s six grandchildren, Nicholas, Benjamin, Teresa, Caroline, Joey and Christian. She is also survived by her youngest sister, Marie Senteno Podlas, of Washington state; and her 90-year-old brother, Ricardo Senteno, of Roswell, New Mexico.  Her other beloved siblings, Linda Senteno Ochoa and Louis Senteno preceded her in death.

Rita was born in 1926, the oldest daughter of Luis Senteno and Ruth Reyes Senteno in Los Angeles. When the Great Depression arrived in Southern California, the Senteno family moved up to Lone Pine and Keeler, in the Owens Valley, where Luis Senteno found work with National Soda Product Company.

Rita started elementary school in a two-room schoolhouse in Keeler, which was a company town. After a number of years in Lone Pine, Rita and her family moved back to their former Soto Street neighborhood in the Boyle Heights area of Los Angeles. It was there that Rita’s great-grandfather Rito Reyes had purchased many adjoining residential lots, which would serve as a neighborhood foundation for many of the Reyes families.

Rita went to high school at Roosevelt Senior High, where she first experienced loss when her close Japanese classmates were abruptly whisked away to Manzanar, in March 1942.

Her life would change again when she met her husband John Casias Jr., at a Knights of Columbus dance. John, who was an officer in the ROTC, must have swept her off her feet, because when she got home that night she told her mother she had “met the man that she was going to marry.” Following his time in the Marine Corps, John and Rita married in 1952 and danced together for 61 years until his passing in February 2013.

When a bilingual teaching opportunity presented itself, Rita and John moved to Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela (present-day Ciudad Guayana), where the family lived for over eight years while he worked as an elementary school principal for the Orinoco Mining Co., a subsidiary of US Steel Corporation. While living in Venezuela, they traveled locally and to islands within the Caribbean, regularly spending summers with their boys in Florida and the greater Southwest.

Rita and John moved back to California in the early 1970s. The Casias family moved to the hot desert of southeastern California where John worked at an elementary school in Calexico. Rita loved to work with numbers and details. She took accounting classes at the junior college, as well as the Imperial Valley campus of San Diego State, where she worked as a secretary for one of the deans.

Longing for a cooler climate, John and Rita moved up to the occasionally snowy mountains of Willits, where John worked as an elementary school principal. In Willits, Rita worked as a secretary, notary public and bookkeeper for several local companies. She retired from the Willits Unified School District where she worked as school secretary for her husband at Brookside Elementary School.

A student of art, Rita took classes and worked in several mediums. She loved painting with both oils and watercolors, and found it a peaceful hobby. She also loved roses – to grow as well as to paint. She had an especially green thumb when it came to getting orchids to re-bloom.

Rita moved with her husband, John, to Sonoma in 1997, where they took great delight in the community. Devout Catholics, they joined the St. Francis Solano Parish where they were active in the church, including the RCIA process. As Eucharistic ministers, Rita and John often brought communion to the sick and elderly.

During this time in Sonoma, they met their close friend Fr. Robert Castro, who was later assigned to be chaplain at Napa State Hospital. This allowed him to stand by her side during the last year of her illness.

A kind and generous soul, Rita was a friend to everyone she would meet. Rita and “John Dear” were well known at Taqueria La Hacienda, Mary’s Pizza, and with the morning crowd at McDonald’s who enjoyed pancakes together. She was also an accomplished cook with Sunday roasts, enchiladas and spaghetti.

A service will be held at St. Francis Solano Catholic Church on Monday, July 14, 2013, at 11 a.m. and all are welcome.

She has been interned alongside John at the Sonoma Veterans Memorial Cemetery, where they will be “Together Forever.”

David Anthony Berto

Beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and uncle, longtime Sonoma resident and decorated World War II Veteran David Anthony “Nonno” Berto passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of August 27, 2014 with his wife Eleanor and daughter Elena by his side.  He was 93.  Dave was born on April 25, 1921 in San Francisco to Achille Berto, an immigrant from Pietra Ligure, Italy, and Emma Baldelli, an immigrant from Pergola, Italy.  He had an older brother Andrew and a younger brother Robert, who preceded him in death.

In 1933, Dave moved with his father to Sebastopol to operate the family chicken ranch in Hessel, where his job was to clean the chicken coops and raise rabbits among other duties.  He was briefly allowed to attend high school at Analy High in Sebastopol, but going to school was considered a luxury in the 1930’s and he was not allowed to complete his sophomore year.  He was, instead, required to work on the ranch full time, as were so many young people in those days. In January 1942, Dave discovered he had been drafted into the U.S. Army to serve in World War II.  A week before being deployed overseas, Dave met eighteen year-old Eleanor Meneghetti at a dance party.  He asked her to go on one date with him before his deployment, telling her, “I don’t know whether I’m coming back.”  Eleanor agreed.

Dave left home on December 1, 1942 to embark upon a grueling three-year journey in which he landed on Omaha Beach in Normandy on June 9, 1944 (D-Day+3); engaged in battles in Verdun and Moncourt Woods outside of Nancy, France; participated in the pivotal Battle of the Bulge in Belgium; and suffered a severe injury from grenade shrapnel, leaving him unconscious for one month and hospitalized for three.  His exemplary service earned him seven or eight Battle Stars, a Sharpshooter medal, and a Purple Heart for his injury, which he subsequently refused because “I figured there were other people more deserving than me that needed it.”

He returned home in late 1945 and immediately resumed his courtship of Eleanor, whom he married on November 30, 1946 in San Francisco.  Eleanor gave birth to Dale Maxine Berto on January 11, 1948; David Anthony Berto, Jr. on January 5, 1950; and Elena Catherine Berto on May 11, 1951.  The family moved from San Francisco to Sonoma in 1956.

Dave worked in the naval shipyard in Vallejo and at Hamilton Air Force Base, retiring in the early 1970s.  In the years that followed, the Berto clan grew and grew.  Dave and Eleanor welcomed grandchildren Maxmilian Victor Zarzana in 1972, Joelle Marie and Amy Catherine Zarzana in 1975, Eric Toscano in 1977, Lindsay Toscano in 1979, and Ellen Toscano in 1982.  Dave and Eleanor attended the weddings of several grandchildren and treated all spouses and significant others—Nick Tomasello, Scott Mangold, Delaney Carlin Zarzana, Anthony Albano, Stephanie Court Toscano, and Lucas Domingue—like their own grandchildren.

Dave loved animals, Chinese food, automobiles, and gadgets.  But more than anything else, he loved spending time with his family and making them laugh.  Dave’s gift for impersonations, his irreverent sense of humor, and love of being the center of attention ensured that any family outing was entertaining.  In his final years, he enjoyed trips with his family to Disneyland and to Steve Silver’s Beach Blanket Babylon in San Francisco to watch his granddaughter Ellen perform.

Although he is deeply missed by family and friends, his legacy of bravery, humor, and most of all love for family lives on in his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.  Dave is survived by his wife Eleanor, sister-in-law Olympia DeMicheli, three children, six grandchildren, six great grandchildren, numerous in-laws, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 28 at Duggan’s Mission Chapel, 525 West Napa Street, Sonoma, CA 95476.  A Catholic vigil service will follow at 6:00 p.m. at Duggan’s.  A Catholic mass will be celebrated by Father Michael M. Kelly on Friday, August 29 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Francis Solano Church, 300 West Napa Street, Sonoma, CA 95476.  Entombment with military honors will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, August 29 at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery, 1500 Mission Road, Colma, CA 94014.  Please direct all inquiries to Duggan’s Mission Chapel at (707) 996-3655 or www.duggansmissionchapel.com.

Albert Weber, 88, a longtime resident of San Francisco, died surrounded by his loving family on Aug. 18, 2014. Albert was born May 17, 1926, in Shawnee, Oklahoma, to Joe Weber and Virginia (Fox) Weber. He was the third of seven children. In 1934, the family moved to Santa Cruz, where he attended Holy Cross School. During World War II, he worked in the shipyards in Oakland and then joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1944. He served active duty on Bougainville (Solomon Islands) and in China and was honorably discharged in 1946.

After the war, he met and married Margaret (Peggy) O’Neill, RN. Albert and Peggy raised five boys in San Francisco’s Noe Valley. Albert’s son, Patrick, tragically died in Vietnam in 1971. Albert was devoted to Peggy, who suffered for over 30 years with systemic lupus erythematosus. She died in 1984.

For over 25 years, Albert helped direct the premium accounting department of Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company. He was loyal and trusted by his bosses. He was respected by his colleagues for his intelligence and esteemed by those he managed for his patience and fairness. During his career, he travelled throughout the United States to company field offices and agencies sometimes untangling multi-million dollar snafus created by inadequate accounting controls. He retired in 1986.

In 1990, Albert was very fortunate to marry Ruth O’Neill (a friend, but no relation to Peggy). They spent many years travelling and were actively involved with each other’s grandchildren in San Francisco and then Seattle, Washington, where they moved in 2001.

In 2008, Albert moved to the Veterans Home in Yountville. In these last years, he had many good times with his son, Dan, and his wife, Fran, and their friends near and in the town of Sonoma. In these later years, spending time with his sons and their families sharing holidays and special events was his greatest joy and they loved being with him.

Albert was very fond and supportive of his devoted former daughters-in-law, Sue Weber and Yeonwha Sohn. Over many years, they appreciated his sense of humor and generosity and were always deeply concerned for his comfort and health.

Albert is survived by his brother, Dugan (Margaret); his sons, Daniel (Fran), Stephen (Valery), Paul, Frank; grandchildren, Joseph (Geneva), Jason (Brianna), Marissa (Kylee), Brian (Lauren), Timothy, Christopher (Dana), Jennifer (Erick) and Jinhe; great-grandchildren, Michaela, Daniel, Desirae, Keena, Stella, Sadie, Henry, Caden, Austin and Alistair. He is also survived by his wife, Ruth; her son, Bruce (Granya) and their children, Emma, Eilis, Brenna, Aidan and Declan.

A funeral Mass will be held on Friday, Sept. 12, 2014, at 11 a.m. at St. Leo’s Catholic Church at 601 W. Agua Caliente Road, Sonoma, 95476, with a reception following in the adjacent hall.

On September 4, 2014 Carl Long passed away peacefully in Napa, CA. He was the beloved husband of Adrian Mohr Long for 39 years, idolized father of Stan Long, Caden Long (Amanda Shone) and Devon Long. Dear brother of Owen Long, Mona Brunello, Martha Berryman (Ron Berryman) and the late Jo Ellen Long and Karen Stewart. Also son of the late Art and Juanita Long of McCloud, CA. Also survived by many adored nieces and nephews and beloved sister-in-law Paula Mohr Jaeger. A veteran of the U.S. Air force from 1959-1963, Carl was stationed in Iceland and Denver Colorado where he was a radio control operator. Upon returning to McCloud, CA he became a logger and worked in the lumber industry for 20 years when he then relocated to Sonoma, CA where he worked in Plant Operations for Sonoma Developmental Center for 25 years.
Carl was an avid deer hunter, inspiring coach to many of Sonoma’s youth, dog lover and family man. This kind, gentle, witty loving man who was first on the dance floor for all occasions and celebrations was his feisty, fighting self ’til the end. As sad as his passing makes us, we take comfort that at the end he recognized us and knew how much we all loved him. We can count on his children to carry on his dance moves, love of music and family loyalty. Carl leaves behind a legacy of love and strength that shines through each of his family members. From the wisdom of Carl “Squirrely” Long, love and respect each person you encounter with dignity and a sense of humor.
In celebration of Carl’s life the family would like to invite you to a Memorial Mass at 10 AM on Saturday, September 13 at St. Francis Solano Church in Sonoma. Private interment. For those friends wishing to make a donation in Carl’s memory the family suggests donations to Sonoma Valley Little League, 166 1st Street East, Sonoma, CA, 95476 or the Alzheimer’s Association, 1211 North Dutton Ave., Santa Rosa, CA, 95401.

In 2005 Jon landed in Sonoma and fell in love with the community. He joined the local Coldwell Banker office and set about making his mark as a leading Sonoma Realtor. His vibrant personality, wacky humor and signature style drew people to him wherever he went. He was often seen at Peet’s working on his latest romance novel, wearing his straw cowboy hat and favorite Hawaiian print shirt.

Jon is survived by his parents, Charles and Janet Cutler of Van Nuys, sister Jane Pullman of Westlake Village, brother Peter of Tehachapi, nephews Joshua and Michael Groner, and niece Rachel Groner. He will be sorely missed by his long-time girlfriend, Lanny Udell of San Rafael.

In keeping with his wishes, Jon’s ashes will be scattered near his former home at Stinson Beach, along with his cat Buster who pre-deceased Jon in 2005. A celebration of Jon’s life is being planned for October. Contributions in his memory will be welcomed by To Celebrate Life Breast Cancer Foundation, P.O. Box 367, Kentfield, CA 94914; or A.L.S. Association, P.O. Box 6051, Albert Lea, MN 56007; or American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 22718, Oklahoma City, OK 73123-1718. Arrangements cared for by Duggan’s Mission Chapel, Mission Cremation Service. Inquiries to them at (707) 996-3655 or www.duggansmissionchapel.com.
